Will’s Journey across Australia 2.5 years after Multi-Level Lumbar ADR

[18 May, 2026]

Will reached out to us in late 2023 regarding his Lumbar Spine.

As a 34 year old young man living in Regional Victoria he had been living with L4-L5 and L5-S1 Disc Degeneration with herniations at both levels. His symptoms greatly affected his quality of life, where even sneezing could cause crippling pain.

He received multiple specialists opinions, and was even told to give up his active lifestyle in order to avoid further damage and pain. With an active job and wanting to enjoy life with his wife and kids, he knew he had to look further.

We arranged Will’s data for evaluation by our German Spine Specialists, and he was confirmed as an excellent candidate for Artificial Disc Replacement (ADR) at both lumbar levels.

After his surgery Will kept in touch with us and has shared his experience with other young Australian patients who have been in a similar position and approved for spine surgery in Germany.

Almost 2.5 year after his surgery we received an update with photos from Will, who was mid-way through a life long goal of travelling through the center of Australia:

“Here’s a quick update from me as I’m half way through this trip reflecting on life.
21 days in a swag, rough tracks, epic views and life long memories going to places not many do…none of which would be possible if I didn’t take the plunge on that surgery.
Cheers, will”

Will’s story is a reminder that being told to give up an active life isn’t always the final word. For the right candidate, ADR can preserve motion at the treated levels and offer a genuine alternative to fusion, particularly for younger patients who have decades of active living ahead of them.

If you’ve been diagnosed with lumbar disc degeneration or a disc herniation and have been told your options are limited, we’re here to arrange a second opinion.

*Please read: Every patient is unique and responds to medical treatment differently. Factors influencing outcome from spine treatment and surgery can include overall patient health, underlying medical conditions, degree and duration of existing spine/nerve damage, surgeon experience, technology and surgical techniques used, post-op rehabilitation protocol, and patient diligence in continuing rehab once returning home. We encourage patients to return to a healthy and active lifestyle, and the introduction of new physical activities should be discussed with medical professionals during the recovery phase.
